The purpose of the Doctorate in Prehistory and Sciences of Antiquity offered by the University of Salamanca is to provide students with advanced training focused on the undertaking and completion of an original research project to be expressed in a Doctoral dissertation of one of the areas of Prehistory, ancient history and archaeology. The program is designed to provide students with the necessary methodological training to interpret the archaeological records of past societies (with special emphasis on the prehistoric times and on classical Mediterranean civilizations), as well as ancient written sources. The information provided by these primary sources, which is the basis of expert work, are to be integrated into the methodological and interpretative context of current trends in historiography, enabling students to independently design scientific research projects.
Due to its degree of specialization, this doctorate’s program is especially intended for he training of teaching and research personnel who aim to become members of both national and international research teams or universities or for any professional who wishes to present a doctoral dissertation.
Admission requirements include basic training in the fields of Prehistory, Archaeology or Ancient History, acquired through previous master’s or undergraduate degree studies or through the Licentiate Degree in History and Humanities. Applicants with training in other fields may be exceptionally admitted provided their application is approved by the Academic Committee.
